In the years to come companies, local authorities and individual entrepreneurs increasingly take the initiative to generate their own electrical power. Sustainability is elementary in this respect. Industries build their own (wind-) power stations on their premises, farmers harvest wind (or bio-) energy from their (wind) farms. Consumer groups own solar panels or wind parks and have their own clean and secure source of sustainable energy. Local authorities facing climate target realize CO2 neutral energy production projects within their community, enabling CO2 neutral cities.
Decentralized energy production
A whole new economy appears in which all consumers, both households and industries, benefit from their own decentralized energy production facilities. The energy consumers are independent and self-sufficient in terms of power supply. They are no longer vulnerable to fluctuating energy prizes. Consumers no longer depend on utilities but work together with them to provide sustainable energy. As a result households and industries pay less for their energy and CO2 emission rates are reduced in a substantial way. Technological advances and economies of scale make renewable energy more competitive than centralized fossil fuel power plants.
Centralized energy production
In addition to the decentralized power generation, offshore wind becomes a centralized power source with many thousands of MW developed in the North Sea. This form of wind energy production reflects social responsibility and is in balance with the environment. Wind farms at sea are built at a greater distance from the coast. Offshore wind farms becoming bigger, a dedicated industry for offshore wind emerges, with specialist turbines and vessels that drive the costs down.
